Liz Flemming is the Founding Producing Artistic Director of Out of the Box Theatrics, an Off-Broadway, Obie and Drama Desk-Winning non-profit committed to lifting the voice of Marginalized Communities through the stories we tell. OOTB has also been nominated by the Drama League, Off Broadway Alliance, and Outer Critics Circle for its body of work. Liz Founded OOTB in 2015 in hopes of creating a more inclusive and accessible space, while also employing actors and directors under full Union contracts. As a low-vision artist, Liz has always made the message of inclusion an essential part of her personal mission.
Since that time, Liz has led 10 seasons of fully Produced New Work & Revivals. Over its ten years of operation OOTB has performed in coffee shops and abandoned storefronts, on playgrounds, in apartments, and just about any space you can imagine. As the company has grown, the mission has expanded to supporting artists through the full developmental process of a piece. In the fall of 2023, OOTB found its first home at 154 Christopher Street, in the former home of The New Ohio. With the acquisition of a physical space, OOTB expanded its mission yet again to include supporting artists through access to affordable space. OOTB produced 2 full seasons of shows, readings, and community events at 154, while also partnering with numerous organizations and independent artists to hold space for as many creatives as we can.
In May 2025, OOTB was informed that it had until January 2026 to vacate its downtown space. While this news was heartbreaking, OOTB was offered a new challenge: taking over St. Luke’s Theatre - a space that needed the same love as 154. Liz signed a 10-year lease to continue amplifying underrepresented voices and stories through OOTB in the heart of Midtown.
Independently, notable work includes Creative Producer on the New Musical Mommie Dearest (written by Christina Crawford & David Nehls), Sam’s Room (New York Theatre Barn), Dying in Boulder with the Tony Award-Winning Organization La MaMa, and The Evolution Of Mann with The Cell Theatre, for whom she has also served as Associate Producer. Liz also served as the Managing Director for The Cell Theater for 3 years until she decided to take on a full-time role as Artistic Director with Out of the Box Theatrics.
Liz Flemming is the current Producing Artistic Director of Out of the Box Theatrics. She has led the company with the mission of inclusion leading the way. OOTB has been nominated for a Drama Desk for best revival (BABY), Drama League for their digital production (The Last Five Years), 3 Drama Desks, including Best Revival (See What I Wanna See), 1 Drama League, 4 Outer Critics, 1 Off-Broadway Alliance, 4 Dorian, 10 Drama Desks including Best New Musical (Beau the Musical), and is an Obie Award Winner for her 2024 Season at Theater 154 and Drama Desk Award Winner for Best Revue (About Time).
